It's been a little over a week and my heart and mind are still racing. I can't get the stories, the faces and the names out of my head. I've always heard about it. I've always heard about people fighting for it, but it never became real until I put faces to the stories. Until I sat in a conference and I heard story after story after story from the survivors themselves and I realized everything that the girl that went with me to that conference had gone through and is still going through. And all I could do was cry, cry and cry. My heart has never felt this way, stirred strong enough to want to make a difference and crazy enough to think that I actually can.
Human Trafficking, Sex Trafficking, Sexual Exploitation, Prostitution, Traffickers, Brothels, Pimps... we've all heard about the movements and the campaigns to end it, we might have come across as a story or two and all we do is turn the page, flip the channel, keep scrolling on social media and even worse ignore the person that cries out to us for help because "this kind of stuff doesn't really happen, and if it does, well I am sure it doesn't happen in the U.S.A". I know I've had this attitude, because something so horrible could not be true. Yet it becomes not only true but very real when a survivor stands in front of you and tells you their story. For the longest time I was hearing about these stories but I was not listening. I was looking but I was not really seeing. But the two days and half that I spent in Lenexa, KS attending the Exodus Cry conference made me see things that cannot be Un-seen.
I would like to be able to tell you about everything that I heard and all the stories that were told, but if there is one thing that I learned at this conference and interacting with survivors is that these are not my stories to tell. These are the stories of real people that are being held against their will to do indescribable things for the pleasure of others. I won't impact you by telling you their stories because you can't see their face or hear their voice break as they remember their past and tell you what was done to them. But I can tell my own story and my own experience in knowing the truth and having my eyes open. Most of you reading this blog know me in person and many of you know my heart, and the best I can do is be real one more time and this time really believing that I can change the world with one reader at a time.
However, if there's anything that I can tell you from their stories that was common in all of them, is that NO ONE CHOOSES to be involved in this industry. Not the stripper, not the prostitute, not the sex slave, not even the pimp or the trafficker. I can tell you that not ONE person is really satisfied with this industry and not ONE person really enjoys any of it. I can also tell you that it doesn't look like society had made us believe. It is not like we see in the movies mostly, there are no physical chains, but emotional chains that we cannot see because they hide behind a fake and fearful smile. I can tell you that the men, women and children that are being trafficked and/or are the traffickers in the USA and around the world are our own friends, our own school mates, own coworkers, our own cousins, our own brothers and sisters, our own parents, and our own church members. I can tell you that these people both that are trafficked and the traffickers, and those who even unintentionally support this industry live among us and we do not see them.
If there is anything that I can tell you from Exodus Cry is that human trafficking doesn't just happen overnight. Women don't wake up one day and decide to prostitute themselves, women don't just wake up and decide they want to be a stripper, and men, men don't just wake up one day and decide they want to be a pimp, men don't just wake up and decide they want to be a trafficker. Both men and women don't wake up one day and decide they want to watch porn, both men and women don't wake up one day and decide they want to be porn stars. NO. These are people who are broken, who come from struggles and real life battles that leave them CHOICELESS. People who are missing love in their life, missing a person to care for them, missing people who ask how they are doing, missing guidance that can teach them right from wrong, missing people that can give them a better choice, missing people that can tell them their worth and show them their true identity and in the most heartbreaking of cases missing a church that will walk with them as they try to escape their own trap. They are missing a church that will see them as Jesus does and choose to love them regardless. They are missing a church that will not condemn them for what they have done and been through but show them the healing power of Jesus Christ.
I could sit here and write to you about how I ended up at this conference but it would take me too long to describe how God has been moving in my life these past 4 years. What I can tell you is that I had no idea how changed I would be after and how my eyes would be open when I heard the truth of human trafficking and realize that IT COULD HAVE BEEN ME. Many of you know that I was brought to the US illegally and the struggle that it has been to be where I am today. Even before I wanted him in my life or thought that I needed him, God has been so good and has lead my every step. I cannot describe to you how incredibly grateful I am that I was not one of the survivors telling those stories. How greatful I am that I did not fall into the wrong hands when I was brought to this country. Around the world and specially in the US people are trafficked as they search and try to reach a better life, in this nation what is known as the "American Dream". But I want you to know that I am not just saying this because of statistics that I happen to fit right into, but because of the reality of family members coming to this country the same way I did and fell captive to human trafficking. Only by the grace of God did I not cross with that same group. Only by the grace of God has my story been different for those who were held captive for 10 years. As I sat in that conference and realized this I knew that God is calling me to do something about it. I can't just be grateful for what didn't happen to me. I have to use what God has given me to help those that are in this industry and help prevent further human trafficking crimes.
For a long time when I would hear of campaigns to end the sex industry and fight against human trafficking, I would think that there was nothing that I could possibly do. It's not like I was going to go bursting down brothel doors and rescue women. It's not like I had a say in anything to contribute to stop these crimes. But my eyes have been open to the root of the problem and what I can do for the fight against it. Like I said before, people don't just wake up and decide to do this. People DO NOT CHOOSE to be trafficked and sold. And all this happens because of the reality that on the other side of these people being sold, there is demand from ourselves. The demand comes from every person that sets foot into a strip club, every person who pays for a lap dance, every person who watches pornography, every person that hires a stripper for a bachelor party, every person who pays for sex, every person who stays quiet and doesn't help a person that says they are being molested and every person who sees their need of money above the worth of another human being.
I'd like to tell you that the only way that I am personally involved and affected in this industry is by the "it could have been me" realization. But there is more that. I know that I may not have participated in stepping into a strip club, but I have not stopped anyone from going to one either. I may not have subscribed or paid for porn but I didn't stop someone else from doing so. I may not have ever prostituted myself or paid for sex from someone, but I've definitely not stopped anyone from doing it. But I will now. I am starting with something as simple as this blog post to bring awareness and praying for how God will continue to use me and guide me in ending this industry once and for all. I am fully believing of what was taught to me a week ago. That in bringing awareness and prevention, we can reach the future stripper, the future prostitute, the future pimp and the future trafficker. And just like it took ONE story at a time to open my eyes and stir my heart, I will fight to end trafficking by preventing and saving ONE person at a time. Because even if I only ever help ONE person, that ONE person is worth everything to Jesus and that ONE person will be worth everything to me. I know that only in Him and through Him ONE by ONE Jesus will restore the Beauty of His people from Ashes.
I'll leave you with the beginning story that started impacting my life, and the one that moved me the most as I read my own name in it... This is Gabriella's story:
